Without a sign, behind the 70's block glass, and a small white door is a one-of-a-kind restaurant: like having a private chef, or a surprise lunch or dinner host. Harry and Bud's is fabulous. No menu. No prices. No ketchup or mustard on the tables. In their stead are rolled up Smithsonian magazines (truly food for the soul), and a quiet, peaceful atmosphere. Jeffrey, its owner, is like the Willy Wonka of natural food! He announces the culinary delights he plans to concoct, and you sit back, and for $20/person, can be WOWED by his prowess. Everything is incredibly fresh, seasonal, and spicy. Our meal was vegetarian, though you can ask for chicken, if you want, which we did not. We had gazpacho soup with fresh avocado; an incredible corn salad with bread crumbs and basil (AMAZING), and an asparagus, goat cheese, mushroom entree -- one that I can't quite sum up here -- but that filled me up and was incredible -- a showcase of local vegetables all expertly cooked -- which you would never know about from the chain restaurants in the area. The water is chilled from the bottle. Wonderful. Harry & Bud's is a dream come true in a land of Applebee's, McDonald's, and Red Lobster. It's like being the only guests at a dinner party, and all the while, each bite showcases the natural goodness of the food. Jeffrey is also an unusual host: liberal, artsy, inquisitive but offering plenty of peace and quiet, and privacy for you to enjoy the meal. He came out, sat down, talked to us a bit about our lives, and read a bit while we waited for our food to cook. Tip: Be sure to call ahead of time to make sure they're open. When my partner called, Jeffrey mentioned he was out picking flowers but would be back in time for us to come in (at noon) around lunch. :) All in all, Harry & Bud's is a remarkable experience.

Basically, Harry & Buds is awesome. My boyfriend and I finally made the effort to get out there just a few days before moving far away, and it was a fantastic and magical surprise. We were the only ones there, and Jeffery (the super-gracious owner) was just hanging out listening to NPR when we walked in, which we continued to enjoy throughout our meal. We opted for chicken as the basis for all the dishes and had soup as well (black bean), and then proceeded to have the largest amount of food for two people that I have ever seen, placed in front of us. It just kept coming, and all of it was delicious (and full of garlic, which I personally can't get enough of). The gnocchi was especially great! The dessert was tough to fit in, but who can say no to freshly baked cookies with cranberries and Green & Black's chocolate chunks? Not this lady. And! Jeffery happened to be steaming some Boston brown bread, which I had never had before (dark and sweet with molasses), and it was almost like dessert topped with thick slabs of butter. So go there. Stop putting it off because (and I only use a little bit of hyperbole) it is everything you have dreamed of.

Dined on 12/15/2012 Way late, and this review has been sitting in my incomplete box for years. There are 3 photos that may not link to my review due to the time delay, but you need to see them. Unbelievable food. Chef/owner, chief cook and bottle washer, waiter, host extraordinaire Jeff. We think his wife was Lucinda, who stopped by to check on her hubby during our dinning experience. Never thought to ask why he named the place Harry and Bud's when his name was Jeff...LOL. Experience.... that is exactly what this was. Never have we gone someplace where there was absolutely no menu and the chef only inquired about food intolerances, likes, and dislikes. Neither fine dining or Michelin Star restaurant, but a true culinary experience that you can never forget. When the food came out it was like a never ending parade of deliciousness. My favorite was the soup... of all the dishes brought out, that one I ate to the last drop. There was so much food, and all the left overs were packed up into 4 large take-out containers. We were only staying one more night, and it seemed a shame to waste, so we offered the left overs to the hotel front desk that evening, and it seems they knew about Harry & Buds as those two guys were pleased as punch to take them off our hands. If you find yourself traveling to Terre Haute, you must plan on stopping here (get a reservation), you will not be sorry. The experience will live within your memories for a lifetime... you will not forget, it is the unique. If for some reason I/we find ourselves back in Terre Haute, we would definitely plan a return dining experience here.

Tip Please be aware that since the chef works entirely alone creating an amazing array of dishes he may well be too busy to talk when you call for a reservation. Also, you won't find any sign to mark the location but believe all our reviews that dining here is an amazing experience, especially if you bring family or friends.

I've eaten in a lot of restaurants in a lot of different cities, but this may go down as my favorite overall dining experience. The setting wasn't the fanciest of any place, but the cozy private dining area in the single room covered in maps with the smells of the kitchen filling the air and the rat pack type music playing through the speakers was as comfortable and enjoyable a setting for a group of people to eat dinner as I have ever been in. We got in right at our reservation time and found some seats at one of the few tables inside. We were immediately offered waters and juice, and given glasses for the beer and wine that we brought with us. The place already smelled amazing, and we had a little bit of time to get settled in and take a look around before the meal was fully ready. The building is a small little place that looked like it had gone through maybe a few different hosts without much of a remodel, which gave it a charming atmosphere that felt more like home than it did a place fitting for the 5 star food we were later served. It was a place you could wear jeans and drink an extra glass or two of wine with friends without feeling uncomfortable. It certainly did not have the stuffy atmosphere that some restaurants create who put out this quality of food. As far as the food goes, Yelp doesn't allow enough characters in a review to give diligence in describing how amazing it was. We were first brought homemade bread and split pea soup, followed shortly by pasta with asparagus and a beef sauce. Then the entrees starting showing up and we were blown away. It seemed like a never-ending line of amazing dishes just kept pouring out of the kitchen and onto our table. We had beef, pork, trout, shrimp, scallops, lamb, pasta, croquets, fritters, gnocchi, quiche, chicken, and I'm sure some things I am forgetting. Each entrée was prepared separately with its own unique seasonings and sauces. We had numerous loaves of amazing homemade breads ranging from a thick crusted fluffy white bread to a moist and sweet banana bread. All of those dishes came with an assortment of delicious veggies along side of them. We even had a tasty dense biscotti with fresh blackberries and a dark chocolate sauce for dessert. Just two of those dishes alone could have left our group loosening our belts by the end of the night, but with all of those offerings we literally each went home with a bag full to the brim with to-go boxes. It wasn't just that there was a lot of food, but each and every single thing that came out tasted like it belonged in a 5 star restaurant. They were all just mouthwateringly delicious, and the presentation was fantastic. There were too many different flavors from all sides of the spectrum to pick a favorite dish from that night. Our host, chef, server, busboy, and person who ended up being on the receiving end of a lot of questions before the end of the night was as hospitable as any person representing a business as I have met. While his talents could put him on par with the best chefs you can find anywhere, the thing that stood out to me is his humbleness towards his craft. This wasn't a man who wanted people to tell him how good he was at his job or who cooked to show off for anybody, but I truly think that the most enjoyment he gets out of doing this is seeing a group of people enjoy themselves and knowing he had a part in bringing them together. For working out of a simple small kitchen, his ability to prepare every single thing from scratch and have it all ready at the same time is an art in which not many people will ever master to his level. This truly was the perfect dining experience for anyone who loves food, and loves enjoying food with friends. The real kicker here is that he only wanted $35 a person for that entire evening. I've had many $100+ meals that don't come close to this, and how he rationalizes only charging that small amount has me blown away. There simply is not a better value in any food related event anywhere, and I am absolutely convinced of that. Eating here is a 100% private event in which your group occupies the entire space and the chef for the evening, so you have to make a reservation well ahead of time, but it is well worth doing.

I heard and read on the website that I could come in if the porch light was on, so day after day I passed by and the light was off -- finally one early evening it was on. So, I came in and instead of feeling like a welcome guest, I felt like an unwelcome one and was turned away. It looks like whoever the welcome guests were, they were having a nice dinner, but apparently Harry and Bud's is by appointment only now so you need a reservation. Frankly, I haven't felt so unwelcome at a restaurant since I wandered into a "Chinese only" restaurant in San Francisco's Chinatown. The food is probably as good as ever, but I'll never know because I can't bring myself to want to go back.

I've been looking forward to tonight's meal for the last month when I was able to secure my reservation after a coworker celebrated his anniversary here and raved for weeks about how amazing this place was. I had to check it out for myself, so I grabbed a couple of people and we headed to Terre Haute to check out Harry & Buds European Cuisine. This isn't your normal restaurant. You can't just walk in.. you have to have a reservation. If you have a reservation for an evening, you'll be the only group there. It's a small place that can hold about 10 people max, and there's one person working. Jeffrey is the cook, the server, the bus-boy and the host. Again.. if you don't have a reservation, don't try and come or you'll be turned away. Seriously. Don't. If you are lucky enough to snag a reservation, be prepared for the one of the best meals you'll ever eat. I get around (the food circuit) and this place ranks, hands down, in the top 5 best meals I've ever had. We arrived at 5pm wide eyes and ready for a great evening. When we left at 8pm, we had eaten so much delicious food that we were almost miserable. I'm sure I'll miss some of our food, but here goes my best effort to capture everything that came out family style: Bread Split Pea Soup Pork Roast with homemade gnocchi Trout with homemade pasta, Brussel sprouts and beans Lamb Banana Bread (2 loaves) Wild Caught Gulf Shrimp in a curry rub with cauliflower Beef tenderloin with tomatoes and a wedge of stilton Quiche with bacon and 2 blocks of Gruyere A whole roasted chicken stuffed with garlic on a bed of fresh pasta Sea scallops Corn Croquettes Fresh pasta Dessert: biscotti with a chocolate ganache and blackberries All of this was for 5 people. When we asked what he would do if 10 people came.. Jeffrey simply said "I'd make more food." We each walked out with at least three Styrofoam containers. Everything is cooked specifically for you, and is made fresh that day. You don't get to pick the menu.. instead the food is selected for you based on what's fresh and available that day. You won't find a bunch of frozen items sitting around here. Staple items like flour and spices are about the only items that are kept on hand - everything else was bought that day with you in mind. How awesome is that knowing that the meal you're eating was made just for you with ingredients bought earlier that day? Everything that we ate was delicious and prepared perfectly. The spices were spot on. The beef tenderloin was a perfect medium rare and the pork flavorful and the shrimp coated in just enough curry to detect the taste but not to much that it was overpowering. What Jeffrey brushes off as "just food" is a fantastic feast that is meant to be shared over a glass of wine and laughter with friends and family That is exactly what we had. I only wish I could have counted correctly in my head when I made the reservation and had more of my dear friends come. It's almost impossible to imagine one person cooking in a kitchen doing all of the prep work, all of the cooking, and all of the cleanup. All of this food, and he had it all times perfectly. Not only can he cook, but he's amazing at time management and timing everything perfectly. Here's the kicker.. the meal was $35 per person. I have no idea how this even covers the cost of the food, but that was the price. Cash only. Leave it on the table. Seriously folks.. if I had but one 10 star review I could give out to a business, it would go to Harry & Bud's. They don't advertise and seem to be against any type of mass advertising.. so all I can do, my dear Yelp friends, is tell you that you've got to try this place. You absolutely have to. Just wear loose clothes and plan to make an evening out of it. Grab a couple bottles of wine and block your calendar, and enjoy!

This is the best restaurant in Terre Haute, HANDS DOWN. It is also one of my top 3 favorite restaurants (and I'm originally from NYC). I went to school here, and so I got the luxury of coming here every now and then. His hours are between 12-4pm but my friend and I always called before we left to make sure he wasn't busy. We went there quite often that he even closed the restaurant down when my friend had his graduation party there! The food is nothing short of divine! He cooks EVERYTHING from scratch (including the bread he bakes!) And has never had any culinary lessons. He is just a self-taught awesome person, who is so polite, and really cool to talk to! Yes, there is no menu. You sit there, and he just gives you a few options, and you can give your preference (we usually say do whatever you want), and he whips up miracles in his kitchen!! My grandma came once and she is a vegetarian and he was very accommodating. If your lucky you can have some of his homemade cheesecake which is some of the best I've had in my life! If not, the cookies he makes are also amazing! Plan on spending about 2 hours there (maybe less if you're not as chatty as we are). It is worth the time! I always have left over for 2 days when I go eat there :) BEST KEPT SECRET IN TERRE HAUTE!

Amazing service, food and fun! The atmosphere is super quirky, which adds to the fun that you'll have while dining here. Make sure to call about a reservation. This is probably Terre Haute's best kept secret. You'll leave with enough food to feed a family of four and a very full belly. Excellent food!! The courses keep coming and desert is always phenomenal.

This business is extremely rude. When I called, he was short with me and then hung up on me. I will never give this restaurant any business and will make sure my friends and family don't either.

Best food around and amazing experience. The food kept coming and the quality was top notch. I can't wait to come back with friends. Take a crowd because he brings so much food to the table. He has standard price per head and it's a bargain at $35. You will take food home with you. This place is a must try kind of place. You must make reservations and bring cash or checks.

EVERYTHING about this place is nothing short of amazing. The quaint atmosphere that offers up map upon map of the different countries of the world. The chairs and tables give you the ability to travel back in time as you pick your seat. You feel as if you are at a good friends house as the smells from the kitchen permeate your senses. I showed up unannounced with my Dad and cousin at 12pm. The light was off but we lucked out, he was there. Jeff asked what we liked and we said fish, chicken, and pork. We sat and talked and could pick up on the different spices he was using from the kitchen. About 45 minutes later, we started seeing the food arrive. Our eyes had never been bigger! The pork was incredible. Tender, moist, it could be cut with a spoon! Served with polenta that was out of this world! Garlic lovers paradise! The scallops and mushrooms with lentils were so good that I had to stop myself from gorging. I then saw the crepes and tortas were on another big plate and had to pace myself. He then brought out the chicken that was served with zucchini spears that were AMAZING. The gnocchi was the best I have ever had and I could not get enough The warm, homemade bread was flaky on the outside and soft and DELICIOUS on the inside.I dipped it on the tomato bisque that was also served. The orange roughy with lentils was some of the best seafood that has come across my lips. How could food this great be made in Terre Haute? We also got many green veggies that accented the meal nicely. Everything was seasoned to perfection, a truly balanced and mouthwatering bite after bite. For dessert was raspberry custard with dark chocolate sauce. DIVINE!! Almost sinful! Make sure you have an empty stomach and at least 1.5 hours to spare. I would also recommend a nap and DO NOT drive a long distance after eating here. This place is TRULY an experience that should not be missed. Remember: No menus, giant portions, $25/person. Be sure to leave an amazing tip.

Made our first trip to Harry & Buds last night with another couple to enjoy some good food in a relaxed and unique atmosphere. After reading the reviews, I had somewhat of an understanding for the experience and high expectations for the food. I can say, without a doubt, that every expectation was exceeded. We were amazed at the quality (and quantity) of the food that was prepared by Jeffrey who was a one man show last night. My wife and I are still mesmerized this morning at our experience last night. The best analogy that I can think of is the scene in a medieval movie when the king is sitting at the end of a long table that is heaped with delicious food that no person could possibly finish! This is how I felt last night. Jeffrey is an extremely nice person and very interesting to talk to. My only concern is that we didn't leave a large enough tip. His price last night was $35/person, and we left a 60% tip, but even with the tip, I felt like we should have left more. The experience and quantity of food threw my sense of logic and reason completely out of equilibrium. We'll definitely be back to enjoy this great experience!

Seriously, I'm perplexed as to what happened to my pictures from this place. It's almost like it was a figment of my imagination and it doesn't exist in this earthly realm. But, Yelp confirms the existence, hence the review. My dad and I were visiting my brother in St. Louis and were planning a drive out to see my uncle in Bloomfield, Indiana. Driving through cornfields in the Midwest is not my favorite pastime, so to alleviate the boredom, I searched Yelp for anything of interest along the path and, thank my lucky stars, came across Harry & Buds European Cuisine. Omg, don't even bother telling the guy you found his place on yelp... he won't care. And that's why I love this place with every ounce of my being. There is no sign. There is no parking (though you can bogart a spot at the theater parking lot across the street no problem.) If he's open, the porch light will be on (old-school.) When we walked in, we were the only customers and that's how it was the next 4 hours we were there. We sat down... and then a guy with white hair, hiking socks & boots, and shorts came out from the back and asked us if we prefer salmon, chicken, or scallops. I don't even remember which one we picked (and I KNOW we picked only one) and he left us. Then we proceeded to hear pots banging, water pouring, oven doors closing. One hour later, the spread was laid before us (two people, mind you) that would have fed an army (in the total and literal sense.) I do not know why he asked us what our preferences were because he brought us every item that he mentioned and then some. Needless to say, I was in heaven... my dad was in shock. After the meal (be prepared,) he will bring you dessert too. Even if you don't want it... which you won't. Just understand, he will make to-go boxes for every scrap remaining of your meal. So you are not in the slightest expected to eat it all in one seating. (That is where my dad and I went wrong... it was such a spread I was stuffing myself to ensure nothing would go to waste because it all tasted so delicious & I couldn't fathom that he'd let us leave with evidence of this bounty!) Our desert was pound cake covered in chocolate sauce and wild berries... that promptly disappeared and did not make it into any to-go containers. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the guy running this operation (and I really don't think it was Harry or Bud) but this guy loves what he does and he loves the customers that appreciate it, too. He was a wealth of knowledge for the area and totally present to offer advice/suggestions on what else to see/do in Terre Haute and the surrounding area. So don't hold back! Ask him questions! I feel very lucky to have experienced this story. I only hope that every person who reads this gets the chance as well. If you are anywhere near Indianapolis, take the drive and just get here already! Notes... if you are taking a group (more than 4) call ahead to give him a heads up. Cash only. "Probably" $40/person, but be prepared... this guy deserves the "mother" of all tips.

Wow! What a fantastic place. No sign, no menu, no one else but the owner and wonderful food. The food we had was a mixture of middle eastern, Italian, and Portugal. Awesome place and I'll go back. His un-listed hours are typically 11:30 am to 4 pm, but he's willing to stay later if you give him advance notice. Located across the street from the Community Theater.

Good call by other reviewers. I was traveling to Terre Haute on business and wanted a healthier choice for a lunch. Adventure is definitely the key word here. Because i did a little research, I got the impression that this wasn't a normal "look at the menu and order" type of place and I was correct, very correct. Basically, it was like I dropped in on a friend and sat in his kitchen while he prepared a feast for me. I think his first words to me were, " How about something invoving salmon for your appetizer?" Sounds great!", I respond and we're off ! I had a delicious split pea soup with a potatoe/lentil? mixture resting on a bed of fresh arugula on the plate around the soup. Delicious! And for some people I know that would have been enough for lunch right there. Next came the appetizer he had hinted at, but it wasn't an appetizer, it was two generous portions of salmon filets on top of a pureed eggplant concoction, absolutley delicious - perfect combination of flavors, acccompamied by brussel sprouts and whole mushrooms, and a delicious loaf of fresh bread with a tasty brushetta type topping to heap on it. Unbelievably, he drops down the main course almost at the same time and I know there's just no way, and I'm a huge eater. The main course came with me to go, but first I sampled one of the crepes involved. Absolutely melt in your mouth delicate texture (homemade of course) filled with a flavor- filled shredded beef, corn, and I can't remember what else, but it was fantastic. Again no shortage of vegetables as the crepes were joined by some nice asparagus. Oh, and a huge block of cheese. Only problem was, he offered me dessert bit I couldn't fathom fitting it in. I can't imagine what he would have brought out, but I'm sure I'd have liked it. In summary: bizzare, unique concept of a restaurant, delicious, highly inventive, highly flavorful food, only twenty dollars for enough food to feed some for a week, unique proprietor, who I found to be very kind and entertaining. My first 5 star review, thanks Jeffrey.

I grew up near Terre Haute & my Dad could be president of the Terre Haute Love & Appreciation Club (it's among his many endearing traits- love of home). He will from time to time send me issues of Terre Haute Living, a charming bi-monthly local magazine that I enjoy reading when I am feeling homesick. He sent me one a couple of years ago with an article on Harry & Bud's dog-eared & highlighted to ensure I read it. Everything that article said about the place came true (and every single review I've just supremely enjoyed reading here on Yelp also matches our experience when we finally got to go). It has been months ago now, all I remember of the food was that it was a divine mountain of fresh, lovingly prepared Awesome including the most perfectly cooked thick pork tenderloin I've ever had in my life. Everything about the place is the opposite of the kind of atmosphere/decor/attitude you'd expect in a Fine Dining establishment. But Fine Dining this most certainly is. If the porch light is on, come as you are & enjoy the very best of Terre Haute.

What a rare find and delight to have learned about this place... Thanks to Yelp. If you're ever traveling thru Terre Haute, IN on the 70 it's well worth the 10 minute drive off the beaten path and across the tracks to get here. It was like we were paying a visit to family that prepared an entire feast of European delicacies just for us. We were the only one dining in this eclectic 50s style kitchen, and were surprised with each course and the amount of food left over to feed us for a week! From the olive tapenade and fresh French bread.... To the polenta with Colbert cheese sauce, proprietor Jeffrey prepares ingredients separately so you can taste the distinct flavor of each. Harry & Buds is a unique culinary and dining experience not to miss.

Forget hole-in-the-wall, Harry & Bud's is more like a crack-in-the-wall, without even a sign to advertise the nature of the business behind the yellow brick. Inside, I felt like I was sitting down in a friend's kitchen while they prepared a meal for my girlfriend and me. No menu, the chef/server/busboy gave us a choice of beverage, then asked what kind of cheese we liked. As if that one fact could distill the essence of each of our palates, he returned to us with a hearty potato soup, the bowl hedged in with a colorful and tangy salad. A warm mound of roasted vegetables (artichokes among other things) accompanied a wedge of a strange and complex-flavored cheese I'd never encountered before. A crusty loaf of bread (also baked by the proprietor) also made an appearance along with a tomato-based chutney of some sort, tangy and flavorful. After asking for a meat preference, he soon brought us plates of pasta tossed with veggies, including the most delicious roasted tomatoes I've ever encountered, and a plate of shrimp still jacketed in halves of their shells, bathed in a lovely sauce and mixed with more roasted vegetables. The mushrooms soaked up the sauce, and were utterly divine. Having learned we were strangers to Terre Haute, he was happy to suggest diversions and venues in town for us. What I felt was easily a 50 dollar meal was just 30 dollars for the two of us. And it was certainly better for us, and better tasting than more expensive meals I've had. Great value, great experience, tell your friends and give this man a chance to wow you.

Without a doubt, the best kept secret in Terre Haute. Plan on spending 2 to 3 hours when you go and you must get reservations. Set price of $25.00 a person plus tip. Well worth the price. Truly a gourmets paradise. Was very impressed with the ceviche......fresh, flavorful and melt in your mouth.....very yummy......

If you're a foodie then you simply must visit Harry & Bud's! It is marvelously quirky and the Chef is a genius. We have eaten at some of the finest restaurants from NY to Miami to San Francisco. To find this gem in Terre Haute is nothing short of miraculous. The food was fabulous and made specifically for us. A private chef for $20 per person is a steal. It is obviously everything is prepared by someone with a passion for food and exquisite palate. We will be back! Do yourself a favor and read through Harry & Bud's website before visiting.

Tiny, hard-to-find place, but definitely worth the search. Harry and Bud's is a one-man operation that occupies a small unmarked building - no sign or posted hours make not only finding it, but finding it during a time when it happens to be open a bit of a crap shoot (if you're a glass-half-full sort of person you might think of it as an adventure). If you're lucky enough to stumble upon this gem while it's open you'll be treated to high quality food made to order and made fresh. The omelets are amazing and often served with asparagus and/or fresh oranges. The chicken salad is out of this world and the wide variety of entrees are unbelievably good. This is not the place to go if you're looking to grab a quick bite for breakfast or lunch, but if you have the time, the wait is so worth it. Come with friends and enjoy good conversation, or if you're alone, bring a good book while you wait. Harry and Bud's is one of the places I miss the most since I've moved from Terre Haute.
